Designed during virtual workshops organized by Finnish cardboard maker Metsä Board together with Lumene and Van Genechten Packaging’s team in Riga, Lumene’s cosmetics advent calendar of 2024 takes its inspiration from the Nordic nature and enhances the consumer’s experience through a unique multi-dimensional structure. Entirely made of Metsä Board’s folding boxboard, it can be recycled in the paperboard collection stream after Christmas.
“The advent calendar is designed to create a visually stunning and immersive experience. The exterior captures the beauty of the northern landscape. The 3D embossing on the calendar’s surface adds a tactile feel to the illustration’s frozen flowers. The translucent holographic foil creates a magical sparkle, giving a festive, enchanting finish,” says Essi Arola, Lumene’s Sustainability & Packaging Director.
The calendar is made from Metsä Board Prime FBB Bright and Metsä Board Pro FBB Bright folding boxboards, which are made from renewable wood fibres and are easy to recycle. According to the manufacturer, the excellent surface smoothness and high brightness of the board ensures that the winter landscape looks stunning on the outer packaging of the calendar as well as on the protective sleeve.
“This year’s Lumene cosmetics calendar has several dimensions. The innovative calendar part with product packages is hidden inside an outer package, which is closed by a separate sleeve. The concept forms a three-dimensional entity, both in terms of structure and graphics,” says packaging designer Iiro Numminen from Metsä Board’s packaging design team.
“The doors of the advent calendar are built from boxes of different shapes, which, when repeated, form a flower pattern. This innovative structure makes the interior particularly impressive, but also easy to manufacture,” describes Numminen.
