"Now is the time for bold sustainability action," says Robbert Bouman, IBG


Can you introduce yourself, your role and experience in the packaging industry?

Robbert Bouman – My name is Robbert Antony Bouman, and I am the Design Director at Innovative Beauty Group (IBG), a full-service provider of beauty products. I started in 2016 as a design intern at Fasten Packaging and over the years, I progressed from Designer to Creative Director. Since Fasten Packaging became part of IBG in 2019, I’ve been managing a broad range of creative responsibilities, including branding, marketing, graphic design engineering, and product development. I oversee all designs delivered to our customers—whether concepts, re-designs, or entirely new developments—and ensure the overall design quality within IBG, including our corporate branding.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the packaging industry?

Robbert Bouman – I didn’t plan on entering the packaging industry— I started as an intern, with a background in retail and styling. Over time, I fell in love with the beauty and packaging world. It’s a dynamic and innovative business. Where the final product inspires the consumers. There is always something new to learn and experience, no day is the same.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a young leader in the packaging industry?

Robbert Bouman – One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a young leader in the packaging industry is navigating the constant evolution of the market. Like fashion, the industry has a legacy and certain constraints – you’re working within a frame- but is also trend-driven and constantly changing. To stay ahead, you need to adapt, rethink, and find fresh angles. However I find it also incredibly rewarding when you succeed in developing something innovative, and the ultimate reward is seeing consumers enjoy and use the products you’ve worked on.

If you could change one thing about the packaging industry, what would it be and why?

Robbert Bouman – It’s clear for everybody that the packaging industry undeniably has a significant impact on sustainability, and while the market is actively working on solutions, it’s still not enough. I wish we could find a quicker way to preserve the beauty of packaging while minimizing its environmental footprint—for the sake of future generations of young leaders in the industry.

We’re seeing incredible innovations in formulas, materials, and recyclability. The options are there, but progress is slow because some companies are hesitant to embrace change, like adopting refillable solutions. Many wait for proven success in the market before taking that leap, which holds back sustainability efforts. Now is the time for trial and error, for bold steps forward. I don’t believe consumers are afraid of change — it’s more about perception.

How do you see the role of future leaders like yourself in shaping the direction of the industry?

Robbert Bouman – Great leaders are those who inspire others, and I see my role as inspiring the next generation to drive positive, sustainable change in the beauty and packaging industry. Innovation is the heartbeat of this business, and it’s something we must nurture and keep alive.

For me, leadership isn’t about being self-centered. It’s about empowering and mentoring young people to embrace change and contribute in their own unique ways. I don’t believe my way is the only way—there are countless approaches to making an impact, and it’s rewarding to help others realize that their steps, even if different, can make a difference.

What advice would you give to young professionals who are just starting their careers in packaging?

Robbert Bouman – There is always room for new talent in the packaging industry, so don’t get discouraged by failure. If you stumble, get back up and try again. Giving up is the only way to lose. Nobody reaches the top without setbacks—they’re part of the journey and will make you stronger.

I’ve experienced my share of failures, but the key is to focus on improving a little every day. The goal isn’t just the destination; it’s the growth along the way. Surround yourself with people who energize and inspire you to grow—if you’re not in that kind of environment, you’re in the wrong place. I was fortunate to find my place early at IBG, but it’s okay to take time to find the right fit, and it’s also okay to change paths if needed

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Future Leaders?

Robbert Bouman – It’s amazing! It really gives a great sense of accomplishment. It’s a great honor to be part of such a great and diverse group of like-minded leaders in the industry.
