What Is a Coupe Car?

Coupe cars can be described as sleek, stylish and eye-catching. They’ve long been associated with performance and elegance, often chosen by drivers who value a sporty appearance and nimble handling. But what exactly is a coupe? And is it the right choice of car for you?

A coupe (pronounced “coop”) is smaller than a sedan and has a body style that features a sloping roofline. Traditionally, coupes were defined as a two-door car with a fixed roof and a sporty design. However, over time, car manufacturers have expanded that definition. Today, the coupe category includes four-door vehicles that still have the distinct coupe-like silhouette.

While some coupes and sedans can be similar in appearance, the defining factor is size. Coupes have less than 33 cubic feet of interior space, while a sedan has 33 cubic feet or more of interior space.

What are the pros and cons of driving a coupe?

Like any vehicle type, coupes come with their own set of advantages and challenges. Understanding these can help you determine if a coupe aligns with your needs and lifestyle.

Coupe pros

  • Stylish design: Coupes are a standout choice for drivers who value the visual appeal of what they drive. Coupes are designed with aesthetics in mind. Many automakers include premium touches in their coupe models, such as dynamic lighting and eye-catching grille designs.

  • Agile performance: Thanks to their smaller size and lighter weight, coupes often handle better than larger vehicles. They’re nimble on city streets and curvy roads, making them a top choice for drivers who desire a more engaging driving experience.

  • Driving dynamics: Coupes are often a popular choice for car enthusiasts, because of their focus on driving dynamics. Many prioritize performance features like more powerful engines, responsive steering and sport-tuned suspension.

Coupe cons

  • Lower visibility: The sloping roofline that gives coupes their stylish look can compromise rear visibility. Drivers may need to rely more heavily on technology, such as backup cameras or parking sensors, to navigate safely.

  • Limited interior space: Coupes are compact, so passenger and cargo space may be limited. Rear seats are often small and harder to access, making coupes less practical for families or those who regularly transport many passengers. Some coupes have seating for just two people.

  • Higher cost: When compared to similar sedans and hatchbacks, some coupes come with a premium price tag. This is partly due to their added design and performance features. Insurance rates may also be higher due to their sportiness, and they can cost more to maintain and repair.

What are some popular coupe cars?

Coupes are available in a range of styles and price points. Here a few popular options, all with MSRPs starting in the low $30,000s:

  • Ford Mustang: A classic American car, the Ford Mustang is known for its powerful engines and customization options. It’s a top choice for drivers wanting performance and style, and it gets an EPA-estimated combined city/highway fuel economy rating of up to 26 mpg. An electric version, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is also available.

  • Toyota GR86: The Toyota GR86, described in numerous online reviews as agile and fun to drive, has one of the lowest starting prices among coupe vehicles. Its combined fuel rating is up to 25 mpg.

  • Subaru BRZ: Very similar to the GR86 is the Subaru BRZ. Reviews praise its sharp handling and performance at an affordable price. The BRZ offers a combined fuel rating of up to 25 mpg. Unlike other Subarus, it isn’t AWD and comes with standard RWD.

While these coupes represent some of the more affordable options, coupe vehicles are available at well over $100,000 — all the way up to the Lamborghini Revuelto with a sticker price above $600,000.

Is a coupe the best option for you?

Coupes are a great choice for drivers who value style, performance and a more personal driving experience. However, they aren’t the most practical option for everyone. If you’re drawn to their sporty appeal and can live with the trade-offs in space and visibility, it’s possible that a coupe could be the perfect car for you.
